LASUBEB/UBEC TRAINS TEACHERS ON JOLLY PHONICS
As parts of efforts to improve literacy levels in Public Primary Schools, the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, in partnership with the Universal Basic Education Commission and Universal Learning Solutions (ULS), has organised an intensive training programme for 60 Jolly Phonics teachers in Public Primary Schools and Quality Assurance Officers in Lagos State.
The Executive Chairman LASUBEB, Mr. Wahab Alawiye-King, in his opening address at the training, which began with 60 selected Jolly Phonics Teachers and Quality Assurance Officers in attendance at the LASUBEB’s Board Room in Maryland, Ikeja, stated that the programme was organised to provide pupils with the requisite skills of effective reading and writing in the classroom.
According to him, the training will also train the trainee, whereby selected teachers on the programme will work with Quality Assurance Officers to mentor and provide teaching support for other Jolly Phonics teachers in the State’
“The workshop will empower the teachers with necessary skills that are in line with modern techniques of literary teaching methodology”, Alawiye-King said.
He noted that learning begins with reading, handwriting and comprehension, hence the training will also enlighten teachers on how pupils can learn to read and write easily with phonetics.
While encouraging the participants to take advantage of the training, Alawiye-King urged them to make it resourceful and impactful at their various schools.
Hadiza Yunusa, the Lagos State Project Co-ordinator for Universal Learning Solutions, explained that Jolly Phonics is a fun and interactive teaching tool that uses the synthetic phonics literacy teaching methodology, adding that Synthetic phonics provides children with the skills needed to read and write.
